چکیده

Evaluation of electron microscopic images of serial sections is a time-consuming process requiring a high level of expertise. Here we present an algorithm to ease and accelerate this process. It is a modification of an algorithm successfully used in computer vision for object recognition. However, rather than recognising individual structures, we estimate the spatial mapping of a whole section onto the consecutive one. This mapping is used to transfer labelled information of the very first section, e.g. a classification by a human expert of different visible structures, onto structures visible in the next section. We investigate its performance on an artificially constructed benchmark as well as on real electron microscopic samples taken in primary visual cortex and demonstrate its potential for dramatically facilitating the evaluation process of serial sections. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Recordings of spike trains made with microwires or silicon electrodes include more noise from various sources that contaminate the observed spike shapes compared with recordings using sharp microelectrodes. This is a particularly serious problem if spike shape sorting is required to separate the several trains that might be observed on a particular electrode. However, if recordings are made wit...

Stimulus response latency is the delay between stimulus onset and the evoked modulation in neural activity. A common technique to estimate latencies involves binning the spike arrival times to form a peri-stimulus histogram. This histogram is smoothed using a fixed bandwidth. The estimated latency is the first time following stimulus onset in which the smoothed histogram exceeds the midpoint be...

This paper introduces specification tests for conditional moment restrictions. The proposed tests are generalizations of the Kolmogorov–Smirnov and Cramer–von Mises tests and they are consistent against all ] Œ alternatives to the null hypothesis, powerful against 1 / n local alternatives and not dependent on any smoothing parameter. A nonparametric bootstrap procedure based on recentered crite...

Recently, Drai et al. (J Neurosci Methods 96 (2000) 119) have introduced an algorithm that segments rodent locomotor behavior into natural units of ‘staying in place’ (lingering) behavior versus going between places (progression segments). This categorization, based on the maximum speed attained within the segment, was shown to be intrinsic to the data, using the statistical method of Gaussian ...

When Horsley and Clark invented the stereotaxic technique they revolutionized experimental neurobiology. For the first time it became possible to repeatably place experimental or surgical probes at precise locations within the skull. Unfortunately, variations in the position and size of neuroanatomical structures within the cranium have always limited the efficiency of this technology. Recent a...
